Across the Universe is a musical based around the Beatles universe. I'm not just talking songs, which are all former Beatles hits, but also names, locations, and Beatles reference after Beatles reference.
The movie is centered around the young love of Jude and Lucy (get it?) during the early years of the vietnam war. They join a group of other peacniks, including JoJo, Sadie, Prudence.... ah forget it, you obviously got the name scheme down by now.
When they move into the music numbers, all but one or two come off really nicely. Good choreography, singing, and sometimes quasi-psychadelic.
Problem is, the actual story is very herky-jerky, as less than stellar musicals often run the risk. Some scenes are outright bad in execution and awful acting, as if (and probably was) the non-musical portion of the movie was rushed. And the musical lead-in scenes are often forced, heavy handed, and just don't feel right at all. Given the qulaity of the musical numbers, this is somewhat forgivable.
It isn't seamless like "Chicago" or the original "Hairspray." But overall, this was a good movie. Sometimes it gets annoying, but by the end I felt sold on it and enjoyed the time. Would I add it to my collection? No. Would I rent it? Sure, it'd make for a fine "dinner and movie at home" date flick.
6.1 out of 10.

Sounds pretty hokey, and something John Lennon would've NEVER agreed to had he still been living.
Folks just need to leave the Beatles' work to stand on it's own. Stop with the crappy musicals and pitiful "tributes".
