According to a lot of "sources", the AFL is going to cancel the 2009 season. Kinda sucks I suppose, but then again, it hasn't got much publicity either.

As I've predicted before, the AFL will soon be nothing more than a fond memory. The ORIGINAL AFL, that is.

I have been anticipating this announcement for about a year now. And the fact that Baker had never been replaced after his resignation made me think it would come sooner, rather than later. I hope Bon Jovi, Elway, Jaworkski, Baker, ESPN, etc. are happy. Any word on what will happen to AF2?

When they started screwing with Foster's original game and changing the rules, they ruined a good thing.
NFL Lite, just didn't sell.....and still won't. Any resumption of the AFL, will be a waste of time. The league is DONE.
Thank you, Baker, Bon Jerky, Horseface and Jaws. Along with ESPN you KILLED the league.

Hi everyone..sorry to be gone so long. From what I can tell, the AFL has officially cancelled the 2009 season but there is a lot of dissent in the ranks of the owners.
The AF2 is not stopping the season and the Tennessee Valley Vipers are going to continue playing. I plan on taking a road trip to Huntsville to watch them play for their home games. It's only a 90 minute ride from Nashville.
If anyone is interested they can email me at shotguncoach@gmail.com and I'll be happy to make sure they are kept in the loop.

The AF2 is not stopping the season and the Tennessee Valley Vipers are going to continue playing. I plan on taking a road trip to Huntsville to watch them play for their home games. Although the defending AF2 champions, I wonder if the Vipers are really slacking. Their website has a highlight film and a phone number for season tickets - it doesn't even have a schedule. It's probably a little early for single game tickets, but Ticketmaster doesn't even show the games or an on sale date, as it does for the majority of the away games. I sure hope the Vipers don't make a mess of things by non-promotion, like the Bud Adams version of the Kats. According to the sked on the af2 website, first home game is April 4 against Quad City.

AFL owners will discuss progress on restructuring Share Today at 11:30am From Sports Business Journal
By JOHN LOMBARDO Staff writer Published February 16, 2009
Arena Football League owners will meet this week in Chicago to discuss a restructuring plan aimed toward reviving the league next season.
The owners will gather at the O’Hare Hilton on Thursday to discuss the plan, which has been under development since the league announced in December that its 2009 season was canceled.
“The meeting is to be a progress report on the restructuring plan that we have done over the past 60 days,” said AFL acting Commissioner Ed Policy. “There may or may not be a vote, but there is a lot of progress to report on.”
The league had set a March 1 deadline to restructure in order to play in 2010. Policy refused to disclose details of the plan, which will likely create a single-entity structure for the league to improve efficiencies and streamline expenses.
“I think we are still on track for the plan that will come together in phases, and we should have some phases completed by March 1,” Policy said. “There are a lot of elements to the plan.”
A high priority is getting a new collective-bargaining agreement with the AFL Players Association, as well as consolidating services such as sponsorship sales.
“The collective-bargaining agreement is not yet in place, and it’s one of the most significant items,” Policy said. “Discussions have been collaborative.”
The restructuring effort is led by Policy and Jim Renacci, owner of the Columbus Destroyers franchise. Renacci did not return calls for comment, and other owners referred calls to Policy.
Policy’s challenge of convincing AFL owners of the league’s financial viability under a revamped structure will be made more difficult by the deepening economic crisis, which helped push the league to end its season in December. Absent from the meeting’s agenda is any formal discussion of attempting to attract an equity partner to help bolster the league’s finances.
One possible outcome of the meeting is a revamped AFL that emerges with fewer teams than the 16 that played last season.
“We have to make sure we have the requisite number of teams, and we are determining that right now,” Policy said. “The main goal of the meeting will be to update owners and begin moving to where we can hopefully get a unanimous vote on the entire plan.”

They should just let the AFL rest in peace. It's over.
