Apparently not a joke (though there's nothing about it on the league site) the San Jose Mercury is reporting that Commissioner Baker has decided to step down.

What a shame. Now the league has to find another figurehead and PR man.
What's up with big boy? He couldn't wait until after the ArenaBowl to resign??
I'll bet Jon Bon Jerky fired him. ;D

At least in my humble opinion, Baker was not responsible for the accomplishments listed in the New Orleans news article. They likely would have happened without him. The league still needs stable franchises, and a better TV contract.
I am tired of the crap (Elway, BonJovi, etc.) being used to promote the league. I wish they would get back to football.
Just my humble opinion, but since a commissioner is hired by the team owners, they tend to hire a commissioner who sees his duties as being what the owners see as his duties. When baseball hired Judge Landis (as far as I know the first commissioner in a sports league) they wanted a policeman, an enforcer, one who acted for the common good. This continued right up to Bowie Kuhn, who often cited acting in "the best interests of baseball." Then Peter Uberoth was brought in, and he really built the business side of it. Fay Vincent, who was like Landis and Kuhn, got dismissed. And then they hired Selig, one of their own, and his chief duty seems to be kissing the owners' collective @$$.
I doubt the AFL owners will do any better than Baker.

I'm sure that it goes without saying, that the next "commissioner" WILL be required to constantly kiss the collective butts of Elway, Bon Jovi and Jaworski.
IMHO, the AFL has peaked and will now start a slow, downhill slide into oblivion.
BTW, the ArenaBowl was another "yawner", if you ask me. Somehow, I just don't find "fixed" games all that entertaining.
